Flaubert’s ‘Temptation of Saint Anthony’, Guy de Maupassant’s ‘The Horla’, and, of course, T.S. Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land’. All have been linked to the Third Man Factor. If you come across an example, add it here.

I was just thinking about, "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon"
and, "Pan's Labrynthe".These may not represent an angel while in danger, but an image of whatever the concious mind needs to ensure survival. OR is this mental escapism into what is considered mental instability.
You could also try 'Angel of Mons' by Robin Bennett - its based on the real legend of the Angel of Mons. Its about a reluctant soldier in 1914 and a troubled teenager in 2014 whose lives become linked by their shared experiences of a 'third man', a guardian angel.
