My first exposure to the Third Man Factor was in Expecting Adam by Martha Beck who, while pregnant, had multiple experiences of another presence directed toward saving either herself or the baby.  The first experience was after an automobile accident (p. 16), another was during a fire in her apartment building (p. 91), and a third was the presence of several helping beings when she was bleeding (p. 161).  Interspersed through the book are several other instances which we would describe as paranormal.  Interestingly enough her sensation of these helping beings essentially stopped with the birth of her child.  I highly recommend this book.
