The Third Man phenomenon most often involves an unseen presence, so it makes it inherently difficult to depict. The cover of Weinstein Books' (U.S.) edition of The Third Man Factor has a striking representatioon of the phenomenon by designer Brian Chojnowski. An illustrator for Church Army Gazette did a good job in the 1930s of capturing the 'divine companion' reported by Sir Ernest Shackleton and his colleagues on South Georgia. But there have been relatively few other examples of Third Man art. The illustration by Ian Legge of the Third Man encountered by diver Steffi Schwabe, which appears in the August 2009 edition of DIVE magazine, is consequently a major contribution to the genre. Here is Legge's moving depiction of Schwabe's experience.
