One interesting case that is not in The Third Man Factorinvolves Robert Manry, of Willowick, Ohio, who in 1965 sailed asmall boat, Tinkerbelle, alone across the Atlantic Ocean in 78days. He wrote in his logbook on June 14, after being repeatedlyswept overboard in very rough seas, “I must say that I havehad the most uncanny feeling of having someone with me most of thetime … I'll have to get a psychologist to explain allthis.” Exhausted and lonely, Manry was joined by a benevolentcompanion at a time when he could have used some calming company, and more particularly, some sleep. A fascinating website devoted toManry has been set up and his notebook is now posted on the RobertManry Project.
