Our Sunday Visitor on The Third Man Factor
Interesting piece in the Roman Catholic publication, Our Sunday Visitor, arguing that the Third Man factor is, in fact, a manifestation of guardian angels. The Third Man Factor discusses this possibility, along with neurological explanations. Read an excerpt from the Our Sunday Visitor piece below.
Extract from "The mysterious 'Third Man' in Our Sunday Visitor:
Mike Aquilina, author of " Angels of God: The Bible, the Church, and the Heavenly Hosts " is quoted as saying, while he doesn't dismiss a neurological explanation for at least some of the stories in Geiger's book, he also believes that the Third Man phenomenon might be more readily explained by a quick survey of what the Church teaches about angels. "In general, the stories Geiger recounts seem to conform with what we know about angels from revelation and from history," said Aquilina.
More specifically, he said , the stories conform to what we know about guardian angels - the pure spirits created by God to be our companions and helpers in this life, and who aid us in our quest for holiness.
"Each of us has a guardian angel smarter than 1,000 Einsteins, stronger than the offensive and defensive lines of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and created by God specifically to serve us," Aquilina explained. "My guardian angel glorifies God by serving me " - first by getting us to heaven, but rescue missions a distant second.
Geiger doesn't dismiss the possibility that the Third Man might be a guardian angel: "If it walks like an angel, talks like an angel and behaves like an angel, you can forgive people for concluding it's an angel," he said. But, ultimately, Geiger has more faith in the idea of an "angel switch," which he believes, if better understood, holds the potential to not only be a "survival mechanism" that can be switched on at will, but also an answer to the age - old problem of loneliness.
The Catholic Church doesn't entirely disagree with Geiger. It just believes that we already know how to turn on "the angel switch." "God has given us our guardian angel," explained Aquilina . "And it's up to us to call on him, to build a relationship with him. He is with us always."

The God switch:
• Accounting for my own personal experiences, has led me to conclude that there is an internal process going on. Extreme events trigger the right chemical processes to occur that activate this switch. However, with all the variability created through evolution, not all people are going to have the same level of trigger development. If indeed it is a "switch," what occurs when it is flipped to another position?

• In my view, when one triggers the switch, it is akin to activating an electrical circuit, but of an extremely more refined nature…A channel is created that transcends time and space as we understand it. Humanity's evolving collective 'brain' is sprouting more antennas, so to speak. Some tune in more readily than others, because of heredity, environment, and inclination. It is to be expected that each new generation will have increasing numbers of individuals with capacities to experience a wider range of perceptions.

• It is understandable that these areas of the brain can be stimulated to create an effect. This demonstrates that the matrix in the brain tissue is capable of receiving and sending signals of some, as yet undefined nature.
Meditation and prayer are likely to enhance the sensitivity of the individual to access of this channel on a voluntary basis.
